Vice President Joe Biden plans to visit Rhode Island Friday to highlight the state’s plan to fix bridges rated among the worst in the nation. Biden will speak at a DOT maintenance facility in East Providence.
Governor Gina Raimondo said she invited Vice President Biden to come to Rhode Island after meeting him at a National Governors Association meeting earlier this year.
“More states need to do this, we need to invest in infrastructure, so we reached out and said, hey, we were able to get it done. Would you like to come and be part of it? It’s a good thing when Rhode Island is recognized as being a national leader in solving your own problems,” said Raimondo.
The bridge-repair plan relies on raising money from new tolls on large trucks and borrowing against future federal transportation aid. Republicans and other critics say the plan will raise the cost of consumer goods and have other adverse effects.
