Kate Johnson has been a mentor to Denzel Negron for more than three years. They met through a program called “Real Connections,” run by Foster Forward.
That’s an organization that works with kids and families in the foster care system. And over those three years, their relationship has blossomed–from one of mistrust and misunderstanding, to a true friendship.
Johnson, who is white, and Negron, who is black, joined Rhode Island Public Radio’s Kristin Gourlay in the studio to talk about how their relationship has changed over time. It’s the first story in our series “Speaking Across Difference,” about how Rhode Islanders are bridging the gaps that divide us.
