Grocery stores were busy Wednesday as residents prepared for a snowstorm expected to begin in the early hours of Thursday morning.
At one Shaw’s Market on the edge Providence’s Elmhurst neighborhood, shoppers who waited until the evening hours were greeted with empty shelves in some parts of the store.
Popular items appeared to include produce, eggs, orange juice and meat. And good luck finding a loaf of bread.
By around 8:30 p.m., all that remained were a few lonely loaves of pumpernickel.
Displays of bananas and clementines sat empty; Bags of salami were in short supply.
More than one customer pulled out a cell phone, snapping photos of the ransacked shelves in disbelief.
Store employees worked to restock some shelves, adding to a dwindling supply of eggs. Other items, like chips and crackers appeared more readily available.
