The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has dropped its proposal for a transit center along Interstate 95 in Hopkinton.

RIDOT made the announcement Tuesday after it withdrew a grant application asking for $9 million from the Federal Highway Administration.

RIDOT officials say the decision was based on feedback they received from Hopkinton residents who feared the welcome center would change the town’s rural nature.

The project also raised environmental concerns as the construction would have been above an aquifer and along wetlands.

RIDOT officials say a portion of the $3 million the department had already set aside for the project will now go to an existing welcome center in Richmond.
