All four members of Rhode Island’s congressional delegation report being safe after a mob of supporters of President Donald Trump breached the Capitol Tuesday.
“I’m safe & determined to defend our democracy from these heinous attacks,” U.S. Sen. Jack Reed said in a tweet. “This violent mob, incited by Trump, breached the Capitol, but our work continues & our principles endure. They will not destroy our democracy, undo the election, or subvert the will of the American People!”
U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse said he was safe, “And I’m mad as hell!”
“My staff and I are safe for the moment,” tweeted U.S. Rep. Jim Langevin. “I am deeply saddened by the turn of events. It did not have to be this way.”
U.S. Rep. David Cicilline called the events in D.C. “outrageous, and the president caused it. We should impeach and convict him tomorrow.”
Asked for comment, RI GOP Chairwoman Sue Cienk said she condemns “illegal behavior in the strongest possible way.” She said those who stormed the Capitol should be fully prosecuted.
