Six months after the launch of her foundation, Boston Marathon bombing survivor Heather Abbott is providing a Massachusetts woman with a prosthetic leg. The foundation is dedicated to providing specialty prosthetic devices so patients can do all kinds of activities like running and swimming. Abbott lost part of her left leg in the Boston Marathon bombings.
When Newport resident Abbott began looking at artificial limbs, she discovered they often run tens of thousands of dollars. And you need different limbs for different things like running, swimming, and wearing high heels. Abbott says she was only able only to afford her prosthetics following the bombings thanks to an outpouring of generosity from the public.
So Abbott started a foundation to help other amputees afford prosthetics. On Monday, the group made its first donation to Hillary Cohen of Walpole Massachusetts. Cohen will be fitted with a custom prosthetic leg, which will allow her to wear high heels for the first time. Cohen had one leg amputated below the knee because of complications from a genetic disorder.
